Tips for good foot care

  • Take care of yourself and your diabetes.
  • Keep cholesterol and BP under control
  • Foot exam by your doctor at least twice a year to check for neuropathy or foot deformities
  • Clean, dry and moisturize well
  • Check your feet for sores/blisters/cuts/redness
  • Gently smooth corns and calluses
  • Trim your toenails with a nail clipper straight across. Do not round off the corners of toenails
  • Wear shoes that fit well.
  • Protect your feet from heat and cold.
  • Keep the blood flowing to your feet.


  • Changes in skin color/temperature
  • Swelling in the foot or ankle
  • Pain in the legs
  • Open sores on the feet that are slow to heal or are draining
  • Ingrown toenails or toenails infected with fungus
  • Corns or calluses
  • Unusual and/or persistent smell from your feet
